Abstract

This paper examines what immigrant mothers in Finland do as active agents to support their children's language socialization. The main focus is on the narratives of the mothers and the decisions they make in their daily lives. This ethnographic study explores the case of four Spanish-speaking immigrant mothers (two Centroamerican and two European) in Finland. The data is analyzed using nexus analysis (Scollon y Scollon 2004). As active agents, migrant mothers work a lot in their daily lives to foster the linguistic socialization of their children. In the narratives of this research's data, three main discourses can be identified: 1) the discourse on daily activities, 2) the discourse on social contacts and 3) the discourse of linguistic awareness.
