Abstract

Crafting has long been recognized as beneficial for mental and emotional well-being. It can help distract from negative thoughts and pain, promote cognitive function, and provide a sense of purpose and control. Crafting also offers opportunities for social interaction and can alleviate loneliness. Additionally, making things by hand can empower individuals and foster a sense of agency. Betsy Greer, known as the 'godmother of craftivism,' believes that crafting can lead to a better understanding of democracy and remind us of our own power. However, there has been a decline in the presence of crafting in schools, which may have negative consequences for cognitive development and mental health. The book "Intelligent Hands: Why Making Is a Skill for Life" argues that craft is an important part of the solution to societal challenges and emphasizes the benefits of using our hands for cognitive development and mental well-being.
