Abstract
- "Black Pulp: Genre Fiction in the Shadow of Jim Crow" by Brooks E. Hefner explores the rich archive of Black pulp found in African American newspapers such as the Baltimore Afro-American and the Pittsburgh Courier. Hefner argues that these pulp stories, which encompassed genres like crime, horror, science fiction, romance, and adventure, were widely read by Black audiences and offered a venue for emerging writers. By analyzing plot summaries and examining the ways in which these stories subverted genre conventions, Hefner demonstrates how Black pulp served as a space for both pleasure and resistance, allowing African American readers to imagine solutions to racial injustice and white supremacy.
