Abstract

This book review discusses "Le fortune di un patriarca. Grado altomedievale e il 'testament' di Fortunato ii." by Yuri A. Marano. The book focuses on the patriarch Fortunatus, the city of Grado, and the document known as the 'testament'. Fortunatus played a significant role in the period following the Frankish conquest of Italy and sought to maintain the unity of his diocese. The book also explores the settlement of Grado and its concentration of churches, as well as the wealth of the Church of Grado. The author argues that the exchanges of gifts played a crucial role in the political dynamics of the Adriatic region during this time. Overall, the book provides a comprehensive examination of various topics related to the period and contributes to the scholarly debate on Mediterranean trade in the late eighth and early ninth centuries.
