Abstract

"China and the true Jesus" by Melisa Wei-Tsing Inouye is a historical study of the True Jesus Church (TJC), a large independent Chinese Pentecostal Church. Inouye examines the growth and development of the TJC, emphasizing the factors that contributed to its endurance. The book explores the influence of missionary Christianity, the role of charismatic experiences, and the agency of local Chinese believers. It also highlights the ways in which the TJC created new pathways for women and maintained its religious-cultural identity in the face of hostility from the Chinese party-state. Overall, the book provides valuable insights into twentieth-century Chinese Christianity. [Extracted from the article]
