Abstract

Lightweight expanded polystyrene (EPS) bead concrete is widely used for a variety of purposes due to its light weight, energy absorption, and good heat and sound insulation properties. The objective of this research is to study the effect of different ratios of expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads on obtaining lightweight concrete mixes. So, different proportions of sand were used to choose a suitable mixture for the production of lightweight concrete made with a ratio of expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads. as the proportions of sand to cement are (1: 2.2, 1: 2, 1: 1.8) and in each ratio. The volume percentage of sand was replaced with different percentages of expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads (35%, 30%, 25%) and the ratio of water to cement was different (weight/g) according to the situation on the basis of flow. The results show that by using a ratio of 1:2 and 25% of expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads, a density of 1749 kg/m3 and a compressive strength of 28 MPa can be obtained, so we conclude that by using a ratio of 1:2 and 25% of expanded polystyrene (EPS), we can obtain a mixture beads suitable for structural use.
