The contribution is intended to guide the reader in taking a comprehensive look at the revised Book VI of the CIC concerning the new canonical penal law promulgated by Francis in 2021. In harmony with this revision, the penal norms of the CCEO were also amended in 2023 after those in the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. The article starts from the reasons for the reform of the Church's penal system. It goes on to outline the process that characterised the drafting of the new legislation on the basis of precise criteria. Finally, he highlights the major innovations contained in the two parts of the current Book VI of the CIC, presenting assessments of its aspects that are considered positive, but also criticisms on various points that, in the author's opinion, could be perfected.
