Abstract

The article discusses a signature specimen of Elbaite, also known as "gem tourmaline," from the Cruzeiro Pegmatite in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Elbaite is highly valued for its range of colors, crystal size, and aesthetic appeal. The specimen, known as the "Jolly Green Giant," is a large crystal surrounded by smaller crystals on a quartz base. It is a deep green color with color zoning and is embedded in translucent quartz. The Cruzeiro mine, where the specimen was likely discovered, is known for producing green elbaite and blue indicolite. The Jolly Green Giant was donated to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County in 1974 and has been on display since 1978. It is currently showcased in a custom mount with a reflective base. To see the specimen, visitors must visit the museum in Los Angeles, California. [Extracted from the article]
