Abstract

This article explores the difficulties faced by LGBTQI+ individuals in Uganda following the implementation of one of the world's strictest anti-gay laws in May 2023. The law imposes severe penalties, including imprisonment and death, for engaging in same-sex relationships. LGBTQI+ Ugandans have experienced heightened harassment and discrimination, with many incidents of violence going unreported. Human rights activists are challenging the law in Uganda's constitutional court, arguing that it violates the country's bill of rights and freedoms. However, there are individuals, like pastor Martin Ssempa, who staunchly support the law and deny the mistreatment of LGBTQI+ individuals, accusing them of fabricating their experiences for personal gain. The article delves into the impact of the Anti-Homosexuality Act in Uganda and the obstacles faced by the LGBTQI+ community. The law, which criminalizes homosexuality and fosters discrimination, has resulted in increased persecution and violence against LGBTQI+ individuals. Activists and organizations supporting the community are encountering threats and legal repercussions. The article emphasizes the resilience of the LGBTQI+ community and their unwavering determination to continue advocating for their rights and existence. [Extracted from the article]
