Abstract

A study published in Drug Safety has found that several potential glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPx1) inhibitors may be associated with the development or progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The study analyzed Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme claims data and identified adverse drug event signals for COPD development or progression in adults aged 45 and older who initiated certain prescription drugs. Medicines such as atenolol, ibuprofen, naproxen, and nicotine showed signals for COPD development, while medicines like salmeterol/fluticasone propionate and aclidinium/formoterol showed signals for COPD progression. The authors suggest further investigation into these medicines and their potential effects on COPD. [Extracted from the article]
