Nosocomial infections are among the most common complica - tions of intensive care treatment. The risk factors for the development of such infections have increased significantly in recent years, especially among older patients. However, the largest germ reservoir remains the patient himself, with constant release of germs from his body surface (airways, hair, urinary tract, perineal region, et cetera). A cardinal problem in these infections is the dramatic development of bacterial resistance to a large number of antibiotics. The aim of this overview is to discuss the epidemiology of nosocomial infections, the spectrum of pathogens with a focus on infection prevention according to the current inter - national state of knowledge.
