Abstract

This is a comparative study aimed at describing how Brazilians position themselves on issues related to voting, elections, political parties, institutional trust (corruption), authoritarian political values, as well as political participation/interest. With this in mind, the analysis will be conducted in order to identify the specificities of each of Brazil's five regions, enabling a more focused assessment of the country's democratic quality. To comprehend the underlying values of Brazilian democracy, the data employed is derived from the 7th wave of the World Value Survey, conducted in 2018. The objective is to foster a debate about the democratic obstacles faced by each region of the country and whether there are shared values among them. In support of this, the initial theoretical framework is structured based on the culturalist arguments of Almond and Verba (1963; 1980), as they both emphasize that democratic quality depends on values beyond the institutional realm to establish a positive foundation.
