Abstract
- In the article "Squatting and the State: Resilient Property in an Age of Crisis," Lorna Fox O'Mahony and Marc L. Roark propose a new theory called Resilient Property to analyze how states address the issue of homeless people squatting on land. The authors argue that squatting is a complex problem that challenges the concept of private property and raises questions about the functioning of global society under capitalism. The book includes case studies of five jurisdictions, but the focus is primarily on England and Wales and the USA, with limited coverage of Spain. The authors discuss the importance of framing issues and highlight the vulnerability of states, although this may discount the suffering of those evicted by state action. The book also mentions the criminalization of squatting in the Netherlands but fails to address the broader context of the Dutch squatter movement. Overall, the authors attempt to synthesize concepts from various disciplines but could benefit from further research on squatting in the Global South. [Extracted from the article]
