Abstract

Haze is defined as the collection of particulate matter at high levels in a segment of the atmosphere producing milky weather and reducing visibility. Sectors of societies are heavily impacted during a haze episode, mainly due to the chemicals associated with haze. The goal of this thesis is to use the HYSPLIT simulation model simulate a backward trajectory for three locations across Malaysia namely Cheras, Pasir Gudang and Miri, to track the origin of the source while identifying other possible contributors to the decline in air quality. In Malaysia during September 2019, the annual unchecked peatland deforestation in Indonesia is the leading cause of haze. In Indonesia during 2019 the peatland fire, emitted smoke at a rate of 0.105 million tons per kilogram. Largest source of local pollution emissions was determined to be motor vehicles, which release about 271.6872 kilograms per hour. For verification purposes, a comparison of the satellite observations provided by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Metrological Specialized Center with the results obtained from HYSPLIT backward trajectories is made to justify the simulation settings.
