Abstract

According to Von Lindern JJ²7 botulinum toxin is the exotoxin of a gram-positive anaerobic bacterium called Clostridium botulinum with eight different types. Botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) is a biological variant that temporarily inhibits skeletal muscle by prevent the production of acetylcholine and the inactivation of calcium channels in nerve endings. Many studies have considered BTX-A injections in LP as a treatment modality. According to Silva²E, the toxin was used for the first time by Scott and Schantz in the early 1970s to correct strabismus. In dentistry, it is used for various purposes, such as the treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD), bruxism, orofacial pain, gummy smile, headaches, masseter hypertrophy, sialorrhea, strabismus, asymmetrical smile, angular cheilitis, among others. The objective of this literature review is to address the use of botulinum toxin in Dentistry in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders and its different results, focusing on the masseter and lateral pterygoid muscles, bringing information about existing commercial brands in the market and the ones that are most used. The muscles addressed were masseter muscle, medial and lateral pterygoid. The results found show that in almost all articles the toxin proved to be effective in the treatment of pain, but these studies are still few and some with low evidence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
