Abstract

The article presents the history of communication studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Since its inception, the curriculum has focused on training specialists in disciplines such as Sociology, Political Science, Public Administration, International Relations, and Communication. Over the years, the curriculum has undergone several modifications to adapt to the demands of the communication field. Currently, the goal is to train professionals capable of innovating and discovering new methods and techniques in their profession. Subjects such as Communication Theory, Mass Media Studies, Sociology, and Psychology of collective communication were introduced. In addition, a common basic education was established in the first semesters, and elective subjects were offered in the last two semesters. A Master's degree in Communication Sciences was also created, and the curriculum was updated in 1984. In 1994, a new process of curriculum reform began with the aim of training professionals in line with the advancement of social, economic, political, and technological sciences in the country. In 1998, the Graduate Program in Political and Social Sciences was created, which includes a Master's degree in Communication and a Doctorate in Communication Sciences. In 2005, the seventh modification to the undergraduate curriculum was made. It is highlighted that the Communication Sciences program had the highest representation of students in both the traditional and Open University systems. It is also mentioned that modifications were made to expand the profile of communication professionals and adapt it to the new demands of the job market. The objective of the new curriculum is to train professionals capable of managing information, persuasion, and argumentation discourses, and who have the necessary conceptual tools to communicate in a multicultural and diverse society.
