Abstract

The article discusses Mike Johnson, the new Speaker of the House, who claims to believe in "18th-century values." However, it is revealed that Johnson's interpretation of these values is not aligned with the Enlightenment ideals of questioning religious dogma and government by kings. Instead, he advocates for the state enforcement of religion, which goes against the separation of church and state that the 18th century was beginning to establish. The article also highlights that the founding fathers, despite their personal beliefs, did not set up the government based on biblical principles and instead chose to keep faith a personal matter. The author suggests that Johnson's views may align more with the Middle Ages rather than the Enlightenment. [Extracted from the article]
