Abstract
- A recent report from Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Centre for Public Impact reveals that while there is significant interest among mayors in using generative artificial intelligence (AI) to improve city services and efficiency, adoption rates remain low. The report found that 96% of city staff members expressed interest in using generative AI, and 78% of the 80 mayors surveyed said they are interested or extremely interested in its use. However, only 2% of cities reported actively using generative AI, with 69% testing or exploring the technology. The main barriers to adoption cited by mayors include budget constraints, technical expertise, and ethical considerations. Bloomberg Philanthropies has launched a web-based platform called City AI Connect to help officials develop and test AI applications, with 100 cities currently participating.
