Abstract

Transgender people are a socially discriminated group, which affects other spheres of life, such as work. This has a negative impact on their social, family and community relationships, and on their emotional and motivational well-being. This study analyses the social interventions developed in Portugal with trans people in order to learn about professional processes, present problems and establish future proposals. For this purpose, a qualitative approach, a descriptive design and semi)structured interviews are used for data collection, using a purposive sampling. The sample was composed of three professionals from specialized entities. The results indicate that public-facing work is the one that generates the most discrimination, with trans women standing out for manifesting a lower level of cispassing. For this and other problems, business awareness is highlighted as one of the main proposals, together with the development of equality plans and the implementation of anti-discrimination clauses as employment measures with a great impact on labor market insertion. The employment problems faced by transgender people are a global problem present at multiple levels, which challenges social intervention and urges it to respond to the demands expressed.
