Abstract

This study examines the sources of social resilience of the population aged 65 years and older living in Istanbul against the COVID-19 pandemic and the coping mechanisms of this group during a social crisis such as a pandemic. The field study from which the veri were obtained was implemented using a mixed quantitative and qualitative method. Quantitative data were obtained using a fully structured questionnaire consisting of 95 questions for 502 participants, consisting of men and women aged 65 years and older, in neighborhoods where different income groups are concentrated in different districts of Istanbul. The qualitative data of the research were based on interviews with 50 respondents to whom the fully structured questionnaire was administered. For the purpose of this article, we focus on the research findings on social resilience and coping mechanisms. In this context, the sources of resilience for the population aged 65 years and older are mainly family relationships, local and community actors, and the social security and economic savings of this generation. It is understood that these mechanisms and actors are critically effective in meeting the basic needs of the elderly population and preventing major social disruptions during the pandemic, especially during the pandemic process when public and institutional supports are weak.
