Abstract

Objective A clean and efficient biomass-to-ammonia system based on the chemical looping technology has been developed. Methods Considering comprehensively the self-heating operation, economy and carbon dioxide emission requirements of the system, the thermodynamic analysis, economic evaluation and parameter optimization of the system were carried out, and the coupling of chemical unit and power unit was emphatically explored. Results The system achieved multiple co-production of NH3 and electricity from biomass.When the biomass feed rate was 1 kg/s, the following optimization results were obtained:(1) In terms of thermodynamic performance, ammonia yield was 13.82 mol/s, energy efficiency was 0.45 and fuel energy saving rate was 12.16%;(2) In terms of economic performance, the ammonia production cost is 0.461 $/kg NH3;(3) In terms of environment, the carbon dioxide emission is 0.978 kg/kg NH3. Conclusions The feasibility of the design concept is confirmed, which provides a theoretical basis for the design and optimization of the subsequent industrial chemical looping ammonia production process.  [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
