Abstract

Increasing global population, climate change, greater competition for land and food between humans and animals, increased need for non-agricultural requirements and further unfavourable framework conditions strictly compete with food production from arable land. The significance of the bioeconomy for the production of food of animal origin is discussed in the introduction. Feedstuffs as the basis for animal nutrition and the assessment of the food competition between humans and animals (see hef-values) are the main focus of the paper. Protein yields of various ways of protein production with terrestrial animals as a function of animal performance level are compared and assessed. Land-, water- and carbon footprints of various protein sources and various animal yields are evaluated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
