Abstract

In this study, it was aimed to determine the opinions of health services vocational school students about the reasons for summer school preference. The study is a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted with 102 students who took summer school courses at the Vocational School of Health Services affiliated to a foundation university between August 1, 2022 and August 19, 2022. The data were collected with the "Reasons for Summer School Preference" questionnaire. Data analysis and descriptive statistics were performed with T-test and ANOVA test. When the demographic distribution of the participants was evaluated, it was determined that 68.6% of them were female, 79.4% of them were studying in the day group, 33.3% of them were 75% scholarship students and 69.6% of them could graduate at the end of the summer school. When the mean scores of the sub-dimensions of the questionnaire were evaluated, it was determined that the thoughts about summer school were 19.68±3.9, the reasons for summer school preference were 21.91±5.33, and the reasons for the preference of the university where summer school was held were 12.03±3.98. A statistically significant difference was found in the sub-dimension of students' reasons for summer school preference (p<0.05). It was determined that females had higher scores on the reasons for summer school preference than males. It is recommended that steps should be taken to improve the summer school practices, which are becoming more widespread in universities and which are determined to make positive contributions to students according to the research findings, to make them free of charge or to charge symbolic fees, to examine the opinions on summer school more comprehensively, and to conduct comprehensive research on summer school and student opinions with larger sample groups in vocational colleges.
