Abstract
- • Fluorescein molecules are extensively utilized to develop fluorescent probes for different analytes due to their unique and excellent photophysical properties and spirocyclic structural feature. • This article overview different strategies for the development of fluorescent sensors, operating through the modification of skeletons of fluorescein. • This review article summarised synthetic methodology, sensing mechanism and unique features of fluorescein based fluorescent probes developed over last decade. The quantification and sensing of biologically and environmentally relevant ions and molecules have been active and emergent research area in domain of molecular recognition and sensing by tailored molecular sensors and probes. In the designing of efficient molecular sensor, fluorescein dye are highly demandable because of their interesting photophysical properties, water solubility and biocompatibility. Additionally, unique structure features of fluorescein dye like phenolic and carboxylic groups along and different active sites available in structure for suitable substituents make it exciting scaffolds for designing of molecular sensor. This feature review article provides a special emphasis on different strategies in the designing of fluorescent molecular probes that are operating through functionalization of fluorescein skeletons which are developed since the year 2014 for sensing of biologically important cations, anions and small molecules. In addition, we have discussed the synthesis, characterization, fluorescent behaviour, and binding mechanism of some selected fluorescein based molecular sensors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
