Abstract

This article introduces a special issue of the American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly that focuses on late medieval hylomorphism, a philosophical theory that explores the relationship between matter and form. It explains the concepts of substantial form and prime matter and their role in shaping physical objects. The article acknowledges the lack of research on hylomorphism during this period and aims to address this gap by exploring the ideas of lesser-known figures and their contributions to hylomorphic theory. The special issue includes papers that discuss debates within the hylomorphic framework, such as the nature of composite substances and the ontological commitments involved. The authors hope that the articles in this special issue will shed light on the significance of late medieval hylomorphism and generate further interest in the topic. [Extracted from the article]
