Abstract

• One-pot amidoalkylation of ferrocene. • Crystallographic analysis of 2,2,2-trichloroethyl 2-ferrocenylbenzothiazole-3(2H)-carboxylate. • DDQ as a suitable oxidizer for N -alkoxycarbonyl-2-ferrocenylbenzothiazolines. • New method for the synthesis of 2-ferrocenylbenzothiazole. Novel ferrocenyl-containing benzothiazole derivatives were synthesised in moderate yields (49–66 %) by one-pot α -amidoalkylation of ferrocene. The reaction conditions were critically evaluated and the crystal structure of one of the amidoalkylated ferrocenes was resolved. Oxidation of the obtained compounds led to known fully aromatic 2-ferrocenylbenzothiazole in 81 % yield, which represents a convenient alternative to earlier methods utilizing cyclocondensation reactions.
