Abstract
- The islands of Java and Sumatra are the regions with the largest number and population in Indonesia, thus the movement flow of goods for consumer goods, production and, others are very large. The in-efficient flow of goods will have an impact on the high prices of goods, and the burden on the provision of transport infrastructure, such as new roads, road maintenance and, so forth. The purpose of this study is to obtain a comparison choice of transportation mode of goods to be considered in formulating policies of the movement of freight transportation between the Java-Sumatra region. The study was conducted through data collection of the origin-destination of goods including the volume and type of goods on land and sea shipping modes at the vertices of transportation, such as ports, terminals, stations, markets, etc. The datais then analyzed using the trajectory method, effectiveness and efficiency method, and accounting for transportation costs method. The results show that for the Java-Sumatra route, sea shipping is still more efficient and effective than land transport, especially for large quantities. However, because people are not familiar with the processes and procedures that must be followed in sea shipping, this makes sea shipping unpopular and the choice of land transportation tends to be still the main choice of Java-Sumatra freight operators.
