Abstract
- Evonik has developed the inoSust® service to reduce the ecological footprint of meat and feed production. This service is based on a systematic life cycle assessment that creates transparency and identifies improvement potentials. There are also political measures and initiatives such as the FAIRR Initiative and the Science Based Target Initiative that advocate for a more sustainable production of animal protein. Evonik offers a holistic solution approach with inoSust® that improves the ecological performance of animal husbandry. The increasing world population and the demand for animal protein pose a challenge to the environment. The production of animal feed and animal husbandry contribute significantly to environmental impact, particularly through greenhouse gas emissions and nitrogen excretions. Reducing the protein content in feed can reduce nitrogen excretion in livestock by up to 20%. The selection of raw materials for feed should be made considering their environmental impacts, particularly to avoid feed from areas with altered land use. In addition to feeding, animal husbandry practices are also crucial for environmental impact. The treatment and use of animal excretions also have significant effects on the environment. A case study shows that reducing the protein content in feed can reduce environmental impact, particularly in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, acidification, and terrestrial eutrophication. The FAIRR Initiative has started to review investments in the protein supply industry. The Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) has prompted over 6,000 companies to submit goals for reducing their greenhouse gas emissions. Governments are also establishing legal frameworks for emission reduction in agriculture and increasing the efficiency of animal protein production. The European Green Deal's "Farm to Fork" program aims to improve food production in Europe and reduce nutrient losses such as nitrogen and phosphorus by 50% by 2030. The European Feed Manufacturers' Federation (FEFAC) promotes the implementation of strict rules for the sustainability assessment of feed. Evonik has introduced the inoSust® service, which supports customers in animal production through a holistic solution strategy. A case study shows that reducing the crude protein content in animal nutrition can reduce environmental impact without compromising animal performance. [Extracted from the article]
