Abstract

We have conducted shock compression and spall experiments on samples of the metastable near-β alloy Ti-5553 produced by powder bed additive manufacturing and subjected to heat treatments resulting in conversion of varying amounts of the β phase to the α phase. The results of these experiments and accompanying ambient pressure measurements indicate acoustic anisotropy in the as-manufactured material that decreases with heat treatment, while differences in Hugoniot curves and spall stress are relatively small.
