Epidural anaesthesia involves the reversible interruption of nerve conduction by injecting local anaesthetic drugs into the epidural space in the spinal segment. The first epidural was described more than 100 years ago. Further development of this anaesthesia involved the introduction of more effective and safer anaesthetics, improved techniques for identifying the epidural space and administering drugs. Since the late 1970s, epidural anaesthesia has become the gold standard for pain management during labor.
