Abstract
- In children, a high degree of variability has been demonstrated in response to muscle relaxants as well as in the recovery time of full muscle tissue function following neuromuscular junction blockage. Neonates and infants are patients in whom postoperative residual curarization (PORC) is particularly dangerous. Unrecognized residual neuromuscular block or the inability to completely reverse the effects of neuromuscular block can result in an increased risk of postoperative respiratory muscle dysfunction, which can lead to hypoxia, the need for mechanical ventilation, and prolonged hospital stay. The use of neuromuscular conduction monitoring devices significantly improves the safety of anaesthesia delivery in paediatric anaesthesiology. The pharmacokinetics of muscle relaxants in children (compared to adults) indicate a shorter duration of action and accelerated resolution of neuromuscular blockade when doses are adjusted for body weight. The following paper characterizes neuromuscular blockade in childhood and describes the peculiarities of striated muscle relaxant use in patients in this age group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
