Abstract

In this article I make a critical reflection against the humanistic ideology at the root of our ecological and public health crisis. I follow a number of authors who have proposed that classical Western humanism, by on the one hand constituting itself on the foundation of man's identity as a "rational animal" and on the other, giving itself a divine ontological status that takes it out of the natural world, has given its tacit consent to the project of submitting and dominating nature and the other that is not rational. I argue in favor of a different kind of humanism, built on Baruch Spinoza's monism and from there I show the link between Friedrich Hölderlin's Romanticism and Rosi Braidotti's posthumanism. Thus, I propose transforming our classical humanistic conception by drawing on the Spinozian tradition, which passes first through Hölderlin's aesthetic monism, arriving then at the posthuman task of becoming nature and animal. This does full justice to our essential vulnerability and finitude. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
