Abstract

Maternal death is considered an avoidable condition, the occurrence of which means negligence of women's human rights and lack of attention to sexual and reproductive health. In this sense, the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) is a global health indicator, which reflects the conditions of access and quality of care provided to women in Brazil. The study aimed to know and analyze the MMR in Brazil (2012 to 2021). Data from the public domain were used, referring to maternal deaths (ICD-10: 088 to 092) and live births (LB), available at DATASUS. In the investigated period, 20,046 maternal deaths and 28,789,402 LB were registered. The MMR in Brazil ranged from 56.7 to 127.3, with emphasis on the North (85.7) and Northeast (78.7). Women aged ≥ 40 years (202.7), with < 8 years of education (116.3), widows (741.0), black (139.7) and indigenous (117.6) had the highest MMR. There was a high increase in the MMR due to indirect obstetric causes (72.4) in the year 2021. It was concluded that the MMR in Brazil increased, appearing far from the assumed goals. Maternal death affects vulnerable women, which requires measures to improve health policies, especially those developed in Primary Health Care (PHC). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
