Abstract

The objective of this research was to identify the influencing factors in terminal efficiency in a rural secondary school in Yucatan, Mexico. It exposes the intercultural approach, which guided the search on the perceptions and ideas of the agents of a school community of a secondary school attended by Mayan children. The methodology used was ethnography throughout a school year accompanied by participant observation, interviews, and questionnaires. It is concluded that terminal efficiency is disrupted by the lack of interest of parents and students, the need of young people to support the household economy, life as a couple at an early age, absence of protective circumstances; in such a way that the factors involved are economic, motivational, family situation and the role of the teacher, much of it related to structural issues that have progressively impoverished and marginalized the Mayan people.
