Abstract

An outlaw pursued by the sheriff of Nottingham, Robin sought shelter in Sherwood Forest where he, along with his band of trusted followers, robbed the rich and gave to the poor. I Robin Hood: Legend and Reality i makes an important contribution to the ongoing scholarly debate on the origins of this most famous of outlaws. Crook makes his case that Wetherby was the most likely proto-Robin, his offences being so notorious that a posse had been specially hired "to seek, take and behead Robert" (p. 232).
