Abstract

Offers a discussion about the dangers of the identification cards that have been proposed in Great Britain. Opinion of the Home Secretary, David Blunkett, that the identification card system will make identity theft impossible; Description of the National Identity Register, which will hold biometric information on citizens including iris scan information, fingerprints and photographs; Report that the government can track an individual's activities with every use of their identification cards; Use of this information by police, the Inland Revenue and other public bodies; Opinion that the information could end up in the hands of hostile governments or terrorists; Reference to a report titled "The Identity Project: an assessment of the UK Identification Cards Bill and its implications"; Statement that the identification cards plan is in conflict with the UK Data Protection Act and various articles of the European Convention on Human Rights; Statement that the Privacy International organization found no evidence that identification cards prevent terrorism.
