Abstract

Life cycle Assessment (LCA) is a mechanism to analyze and calculate the environmental impact of a product at each stage of its life cycle. Impact measurement is done by identifying, measuring, analyzing and calculating potential emissions related to its life cycle. The environmental impacts that occur at each stage of the sugar life cycle are analyzed on the use of materials and energy. The scope of LCA is cradle to gate, starting from sugar cane plantation, transportation from plantation to factory to processing sugar in the factory. The research objective was the application of life cycle assessment on cane sugar in sugar factories. Potential greenhouse gas emissions in the process of producing WCS using the Lyfe cycle assessment approach. Processing of white crystal sugar (WCS) using dregs fuel in the dregs cogeneration system produces emissions of 755 kg CO2−eq per tonne of WCSwhich is equal to 60 326.8 tonnes CO2−eq per year. Hotspots of CO2−eq emissions in sugarcane plantations (97.6%), WCSproduction process (1.3%) and transportation (1.1%). LCA is very useful as a tool for assessing environmental impact throughout the production chain. Reducing GHG emissions can be carried out by managing the use of fertilizers in the plantation, increasing factory efficiency and using high quality sugarcane raw materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
