Abstract

Theories concerning the impact of race and class have underemphasized the importance of the joint effects of these two explanatory variables. This article offers an explicitly interactive model based on the concept of "ethclass." Focusing on the black middle class as a prime example of an ethclass, the authors find that upper status blacks are somewhat more conservative than their tower status race peers (with regard to attitudes toward social welfare spending) but are significantly more liberal than their white class peers.
