Abstract

In this article I examine the way in which the work of poet Astrid Cabral gives voice to plants and animals from her native region, the Amazon River Basin. I begin by analyzing the close ties that Cabral establishes with the natural world and with non-human beings in her texts. I then focus on issues of food ethics present in all of her work, showing how Cabral questions the core of a Western-style diet, based on the consumption of plants and animals, and which does not consider these beings’ right to existence. The last section of the article establishes a bridge between these reflections on food and ecofeminism. Cabral draws a comparison between the exploitation of the female body and the consumption of animal meat, which is a point to departure for a broader critique of contemporary consumerism.
