Over the last twenty years, the historiography on cathedral chapters in southern Italy has not made much progress, in contrast to central-northern Italy, which now reveals a fair number of studies and a more marked interest in the subject in its various aspects. In addition, the uneven distribution of sources, if not, at times, their absence, and the erudite approach of investigation with its consequent scarce circulation in the scientific field contribute to this imbalance. This paper provides the first results on the characteristics of the clergy of Bari cathedral from the origins of the diocese until the end of the Norman age and illustrates some aspects of the process that led to the birth of the cathedral chapter in the second half of the 12th century.
