Abstract

This essay examines the role of women DJs and their positioning within electronic/ dance music culture, which is overwhelmingly dominated by men. The Sisterdjs listserv is an educating and encouraging space for its participants with very few offline equivalents. Using Butler's theory of performativity, I argue that list discourse positively impacts the identity construction of women DJs by drawing attention to the ways that women are discursively positioned at the intersections of music, technology, and culture.
