The article offers a perspective on person-centered care (PCC). It discusses imperatives for PCC including ethical/professional, scientific/evidence-based and economic justifications. It stresses the need for a global theory of PCC and raises concern about the tension between PCC and guideline-based approaches to evidence-based medicine and healthcare improvement. It considers the operationalisaton of PCC via multistakeholder involvement, competency frameworks and code of practice.
