Abstract

The existence of Batik in Indonesia was related to the development of kingdoms in the archipelago to the spread of Islamic teachings in Java. Batik in the Mataram kingdom, the Kasunanan period, and the Islamic sultanate period had distinctive patterns and colors. After the end of the 18th and 19th centuries, the development of Batik in Java was rapid with the existence of cotton production. In the 20th century, the development of the Batik industry increased with the presence of home Batik production. The purpose of this paper was to reveal the spatial potential of the house for home industry activities carried out by coastal women in community empowerment in Mojo Village, Pemalang. The method of community empowerment initiated by the Department of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of Central Java Province, the formation of two coastal women's groups, comparative studies for two Batik groups in Gemawang, Bawen, Semarang district, and historical studies of Batik activities in Java in the past. From these activities and studies of old literature on Batik activities, the researchers found that the process of Batik activities in the yard of the house had the opportunity to be developed as a home industry activity.
