Abstract

This article reports that Great Britain has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Europe. The trend in Great Britain over the past 30 years has been a decline in the number of teenage conceptions and a higher proportion of abortions. Women delay making that important decision, influenced by policy makers' paranoia about unplanned pregnancies and an overemphasis on the responsibilities of parenthood. By contrast, young women look at having a baby as no big deal. Pregnancy is more likely when young women feel life has little else to offer them. If they do not believe themselves capable of further education and a career, motherhood does at least offer a role.
