- This article discusses two and a half centuries of commentary on the salt-fish crux in "The Merry Wives of Windsor." Complaint of poet Henry James Pye on the crux; Most drastic solution to the problem of the crux; Problems with many of the two-"Coate" readings in the opening scene of "The Merry Wives of Windsor," which has long ranked among the most perplexing Shakespearean cruxes.
