Abstract
- This remarkable book has grown out of research by the authors and other researchers in support of a native title claim by the Wik peoples over a large part of the western Cape York Peninsula in northern Queensland. (51) '... the model that seemed most appropriate for asserting native title in the Wik case was one of the clans, not separately and severally but collectively, articulating with each other in a complex way to form higher-level groupings of varying scopes, within the broad rubric of the Wik ... nation'. Sutton was uniquely qualified to deal with the first of those topics as a result of his linguistic-anthropological fieldwork in the Wik region since 1976. [Extracted from the article]
