Abstract

This article offers tips for enabling e-mail service on an Internet-ready cellular telephone. First, the user must ensure that the wireless carrier supports the protocol used by the e-mail account from the Internet service provider. Most major wireless carriers support Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3), though Verizon supports only Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP). Even the e-mail system of the business supports the same protocol as the wireless carrier, the Information System department should be consulted. Though both Microsoft Exchange and IBM Lotus Domino servers support POP3 and IMAP, the company's virtual private network requirements or firewall settings could stymie access.
