Abstract
- If the previous frost susceptibility criterion based only on the percentage passing the 0.075 sieve greater than 10% is still adopted, substantial discrepancies in the assessment of frost susceptibility of sands with various fines will arise. With reference to previous relevant studies ([3]; [4]), the frost susceptibility of coarse-grained soils including sand is closely associated with fines content. Coarse-grained soils with fines rich in clay mineralogy such as montmorillonite and kaolinite have a more significant frost susceptibility than those without clay mineralogy.
