Abstract

Pain is the largest independent indicator of survival in cancer patients. Despite the growing interest and initiatives for pain management, the prevalence of pain in cancer patients is 50.7%. It has been seen that many patients with poorly controlled cancer pain with major opioids need alternative treatments based on interventional techniques. We present the case of a patient with uncontrolled cancer pain due to poor response to systemic analgesic treatment with opioids. After a good response to oncospecific treatment and a change in life expectancy, interventional treatment was agreed upon, implanting an intrathecal perfusion pump to manage pain and improve their quality of life. Intrathecal infusion of opioids via an implantable pump may particularly benefit patients with severe intractable pain or intolerable side effects of systemic analgesic therapy. There is increasing evidence that infusion pumps provide more effective analgesia with fewer side effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
