Abstract

In order to contribute, from lithic technology studies, to understand ways of life, I analyzed the lithic artifact assemblage from a structure of Las Escondidas (Antofagasta de la Sierra, Catamarca). I put into dialogue archaeological models in use in Antofagasta de la Sierra-of adaptive roots-with an approach that highlights the social role of technology in the construction of the world. I became interested in the dispositions of the technological habitus that enabled and restricted the choices involved in the making, maintenance, and use of stone tools in this context. I built a technological model for the analyzed context, which represents the repertoire enabled by the technological habitus expressed in the attributes of the artifactual set. The material, technical, procedural, and endpoint variability of the analyzed assemblage allows us to delve into the complexity of the lithic technology of the first millennium A.D. in the region.
